The Wizar'd used to be a medicore, slightly underinspired trad.doom band. It took them 6 years and numerous releases to find their sound and create something really worthy. 2010's "Pathways Into Darkness" brings us great, harsh trad.doom with amazing expressive vocals. Yeah, the singer is bad. But was Ozzy a good singer, technically? No. Is Albert Witchfinder? Not really. Ol' Rusty Vintage Wizard Master (hail cheesy doom stage names) has this raw, indeed rusty voice and he's finally not affraid to use it.

I dig it when a split has a "famous" and a new band facing each other. Though both collectives are "new" for me, as this is the first time I'm exposed to either of them. Two 'girly' bands. "Female fronted metal". You know, like Nightwish and Evanescence.
Jucifer deliever a fair dose of harsh punkish sludge(core). Now, Show of Bedlam is a promising newcomer, with a mix of retro, psychedelic sound, doom and twisted female vocals. My personal favourite is "Miss Johnny Shirt", where the vocal palette includes spoken word, 70's singing and screams.

Oh yes I do, I do love the Lamp!! Traditional doom metal at its best, with the accent on traditional. Most trad.doom bands only incorporate "sabbathisms", but not the Lamp, oh no, they go further and add the 80's to the 70's, they are heavy on NWOBHM influences. Aaaand they are proud Englishmen.
Their demo (just like all their material) has a pretty raw but warm and enjoyable sound and what's more important, great compositions, interesting songs, riffs-riffs-riffs.

Then I learned German, got my hands on a discography, had a few murky, night-time listening sessions, opened up a dictionary or two, and, well, now I'm a fan. "Tabula Rasa" is a great album, it has all these spoken word stuff, various drones and quite interesting arrangements.

Here's a feel-good record for you all. This is easy-going stoner rock with various "alternative" overtones plus a touch of retro by Millionaire's guitarist, who also was in Mark Lanegan Band. Oh, and the first album of the project featured Lanegan on one of the tracks. Musically it's somewhere between Millionaira (what a surprise), Brian Jonestown Massacre ("The Color of Sundown" even uses the same chords as BJM's "Servo"...), The Dandy Warhols (chorused vocals), some Eagles of Death Metal, but with a more polished aesthetic. Some songs drift into other territories as well, callwords include "gothic Americana", "new country" etc. Might not be a challenging, original and ground-breaking record, but it's a) professional, b) good, c) that's all.

Not the stuff you usually see here (because the stuff you usually see here is ABSCENCE get it -snort snort-). This is progressive gothic metal, or something along those lines.They mix a whole lot of styles. Complex songs, dramatic vocal delivery (male clean & growl, female clean sometimes), violins. But not in your usual "gothicslash folk metal" way when the violin is just used to repeat a simple catchy melody from time to time. No. As Light Dies, and G-d blesss 'em for it, use the violin as a real instrument. Way to go!

It's an ALBUM, with fairly consistent material, great vocals, nice warm production (it's raw, but not br00tal and noisey), nice acoustic passages, etc. Get it, it's a great listen!

Long time, no posts. Sorry guys... I had/have all kinds of computer & internet access problems, work, study, you know the drill. Right now I'm exploiting my girlfriend's fast broadband connection, so here's a quick one, the total 70's worship "occult rock" EP by The Devil's Blood. It's all epic riffs, driving beats, choruses, with a dark atmosphere and sometimes a nifty touch of kitsch. Not the kind of thing I usually go for, but this 5-song record is a masterpiece. Great compositions, catchy melodies, a nice female voice; music reaching straight-ahead rock songs to more psychedelic jams (e.g. closer "Voodoo Dust", a 10-minute monster). Hard rock has never been so soft. It's a pity their 2009 full-length kinda sucks, it's just mehh, lame and bland.

A weird one. Skeleton of God released an EP "Urine Garden" ages ago, then vanished, only to reappear in 2008 with this kick-ass mix of psychedelia and brutal death metal. Yepp, and it's indeed psychedelic, it's not just a tag. I don't usually listen to death metal, but this album I like a lot.

A very impressive piece of work indeed. It's been some time since I've found a decent "free jazz" influenced record that doens't bore me to death and holds enough, if not surprises, but at least interesting moments to be worth a second, third etc listen. Ultralyd's "Conditions" features free-jazzy saxophones with very tight (almost rock-like) drumming and various noises, effects... Not abrasive but not "ambient" or "smooth" either. Uneasy listening without ears bleeding.

An odd-one-out post. This is a compilation of public domain old-time American songs, gathered from archive.org. Yeah, of course, you can download these songs from there as well, but one by one. Basically I'm just offering a bundle, a sample.
The songs are by various string bands, banjo- and fiddle-players, singers, etc... a mixed bunch. But all great, all, old, all amazing. I really love this kind of music. And all things like pre-war blues had (and have) a great influence on my own creations.

Vir' (ВИРЬ) is a Russian one-man band, a bass-player who's sometimes accompanied by a drummer or some other musicians. This is a single archive of the first three demos (2002-2005), containing raw punky sludgecore songs, with lyrics shouted in Russian. A full-length album (Нижний лес) was released in this key as well. Since then the band's profile has shifted more towards abstract droney soundscapes and ambient noise. I'll upload the 2008 album, Хорна, it's awesome.

Elizabeth Cotten's story is worth some reading (google is your friend) and her music is, well, worth a few thousand listens. No words can describe it. As promised, some more Burning Star Core. This release is different. The frist two tracks are more eclectic, with occassional drumming, more varied violin-effects, sometimes in a dark ambient vein, but mostly just very psychedelic, trance-inducing. Third track "Benjamin" in more along the lines of "Amelia" and "Nyarlathotep" (mm, Lovecraft) is just a bunch of weird noises and modulated human voice.
More to come? Possibly. He has some more good stuff, from the eclectic style.

A guy with the name C. Spencer Yeh can't do wrong. Especially if he's working in the field of (mostly) improvised noise and is holding a violin in his hand. His musical output is impossible to keep track of. Too much releases on too much underground labels. Whatever. Let's just stick to nice and cosy tip of the iceberg here. This is a CDr/10" release, featuring three tracks, displaying mostly the minimalistic drone-electronics sound of his project (there are other sides as well, to be featured in following posts). "Supersonic Woman" is spacey ambient, "Homing Pigeon" (Worms is all I think of...) is a mish-mash of weird sounds, always reminds me of being inside a ship, by the way, all that crackling and waving and cockroaches chewing their way through the wood. Then there's the lengthy "Point of Departure etc", which is almost like a Reich composition.

Yet another doomy greatness!! This time from Argentina, singing in their native Spanish and kicking ass the stoner way. I highly reccomend this album becaue it doesn't represent your standard stoner sound, but offers a unique way of smokin' and rockin'. And great songwriting skills! Not a single unneeded sound, everything HAS to be there, each riff, each break, each solo. Great vocals. Get it, I'm not capable of writing a better overview right now. Believe me, this is great shit.

This record is a real hit, out of the blue. More precisely - out of Minsk, Belarus. These guys mix bluesy stoner rock with some hardcore, throw in some saxophone and other tasty things here or there. I seriously didn't expect "На краю"/"On the Edge" to be so fuckin cool. Energetic, raw, non-trivial music. Lyrics are mostly shouted in a hardcore manner, there are some gang vocals, more standard up-beat rock singing... Get this. You can also download it from their myspace's blog. Even if you don't like the previews, get the album, it works better when listened to as a whole. The songs just flow into each other. And the opening track, which is probably my personal favourite, is not featured on myspace. So. Go.

This post only needs one tag: Doom. Or maybe I should tag it twice: Doom, Doom. Yeah, that's what I'm doing. Because Lord Vicar is all about doom. In that good old traditional way. A tradition that never existed before its own revival. Whatever. Slow heavyness, epic vocals (not in the power metal sense), the way it's supposed to be.
And this is a supergroup. Now, I don't usually like supergroups, but in this case, all members are just supposed to do what they are the best at: doom. This album is a masterpiece. Timeless in that "stuck in the 70's, remastered to fit current 'trends' or tastes" way. I'll just tag it once again, I hope blogspot allows multiple-tag-repeats.

This album is truly a masterpiece, with lengthy compositions revolving around acoustic passages, piano, chanting and occassional outbursts (in that doomy slow way) of growling and distortion. An amazing listen. This is their second effort. The first album is in a similar vein, but less sophisticated and includes more shitty synth strings.

Three lengthy compositions are presented here, a mix of death-doom, doom, traditional, with psychedelic overtones, great quality, good musicianship. And great lyrics (in Russian). A truly talented band. Get this album from Solitude Productions, it's totally worth it.

Here's a pretty awesome release, Aluk Todolo's first EP. Features two compositions (side A & B, respectively). They are one of those bands, whose music gets labeled krautrock all the time, well, yeah, there's some krautrock here, the songs are driven by a steady motorik beat, they are long and monotonous... yeah. Whatever. They took this so called krautrock (krautrock almost became the new post-metal) and added noise and black metal.

Aarni is back, with an album so good that I almost feel guilty for sharing it. Actually, their previous effort Bathos achieved the same effect. So please, if you like the music, head over to their site (aarni.info) and buy these albums.
Tohcoth evolves the same recipe and takes it to the next level. We have doom metal in the base, with lots of prog, folk and experimental elements. Very atmospheric layered songs. Amazing instrumentals. Chanting!! Secret societies!! It's only April, but this album might just be the best of 2008.

Seven longish songs, each clocking over 6-7 minutes, very nice instrumentals, singing (in Russian), overall goodness. And very catchy melodies, Finn McCool, for example.

This is supposed to be "more accessible than any dead raven release of the past few years", according to Smolken's site. You know, the guy who makes those endless Wolfmangler albums. Dead Raven Choir is another project by him. Only the songs are shorter. Less drone. Some of the albums are raw and noisy, black metallish, some reflect a heavier folk influence.
Lesbian Corpse Wolves represents the second kind. Interesting female guest vocals, decent male guest vocals. The Man himself (Smolken) sings too, but not so much.

Yellow #5 - Demon Crossing

Once again, a band with an impressive list of members: Dave Catching, Brant Bjork and Molly McGuire. Now, Molly McGuire is one interesting person. Unlike Smolken, she displays a wide variety of genres. She played bass in Nick Olliveri's insane punk extravaganza Mondo Generator. She formed The Spores, a band so pop, that I'm ashamed to listen to it. And here's Yellow #5's only album, Demon Crossing. And wow.
I mean, WOW. Her voice is great! And as a songwriter, she is equally good. This, with the amazing musicianship of Catching, Bjork and McGuire herself results in one of the best pop-rock records I've heard recently. Interesting and varied and CATCHY AS HELL. One of the album's highlight, "ICFCFBM", sports a chorus which hooked me on instantly. There's the punkish "Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee", the mellow "Screaming Mimi"... Etc etc etc.
I love this album.

Another Wolfmangler release (the other). Four songs this time, very similar, with drones and stuff, maybe more distorted. OKKKAY, I admit, it's the same shit. The same fuckin dronefolk shit. But it's great. Of course, it sucks when an artist sticks to an algorithm and releases a shitload of identical albums... Smolken (the guy behind the music) belongs to this kind, unfortunately. Still... His stuff (Wolfmangler, Dead Raven Choir) is a great listen.
I didn't get a bunch of albums released under his projects for nothing.

When I found this album, I felt like the luckiest man on Earth. And not only on Earth. In the whole Universe! And more!! Yeah!! Space is no limit!
Actually, I fell in love with this space/desert rock supergroup without hearing a single track. The list of contributors was enough for me, especially back in that time (a year ago I was gay for the Palm Desert Scene. I still am, actually). This s/t album by the earthlings? is great!! Very psychedelic, lots of interesting beeps and spacey sound layers over the tiight, hypnotic drumming... Yeah. Okay, I admit, sometimes they go too far: I mean, every single track has those wooowooooo spaceship!! sound effects BUT WHATEVER!! I love wooowooo spaceship!! sound effects.
I hope there's intelligent life out there. And I hope it's portayed well by the earthlings?.

Guitar drone/ambient (James Plotkin, ex-Khanate) with female death growls (Runhild Gammelsaeter, ex-Thorr's Hammer). Wow. This is truly disturbing stuff. Thorr's Hammer is one of the groups I simply can't listen to... The vocals are too much for me. Strange, in this format (without doom metal), it's more interesting and, uhm, pleasent? No that's not the right word. Whatever. KHLYST's Chaos is my Name is good. Especially tracks "I", "III" and "VII". Sadly, this is the only release.

Chello-strangling* mind-twisting music. Acoustic sludge? With elements of black metal? Hell yeah, I *love* making up labels for bands. Wolfmangler's great. Very atmospheric. And droney/sludgey/doomy. Without stepping on the distortion pedals. Honestly, I don't understand the presence of 6 tracks on Dwelling in a Dead Raven etc. Sounds like one big song for me. A big, depressing, 50-minute eulogy (eulogy of humanity and everything. You know the drill)

Church of Misery - The Second Coming

This is what you get after some delay: a kick-ass album by Japanese band Church of Misery. The Second Coming, which is waaaay superior to their first release imho, contains seven fuzzy, raw and heavy-as-hell songs about serial killers. Yeah. Mass murderers, notorious rapists and co. are the Church of Misery guys' obsession. As in every stoner/doom outfit, there's a healthy amount of Black Sabbath, but in a faster and dirtier way.
Damn, what's up with Japanese bands and stoner/doom metal? Seems like the southern gods of America moved to the east. Boris, Solar Anus, Church of Misery - all great stuff and as doom as it gets.

So, Ufomammut's Godlike Snake. It's heavy. It's psychedelic. It's stoner-elevator music, as described by a reviewer on stonerrock.com. Yeah, he's right. You get trippy bass-lines, down-down-down-tuned riffs, a shitload of effects and synthetic sounds. Get it, it's tasty.

Ahhh... I'd go gay for Mark Lanegan, seriously (according to the majority of my friends, I already did). His voice is so powerful... And that's not all! On Bubblegum he moved away a bit from the almost entirely country/noir-folk sonic world of his previous solo albums and brought in more dirty blues, more rock, more aged drum-machines (heard in "Metamphetamine Blues" and "Head" - mmmm). Oh, did I mention the collaborators?

Melvins - (a) Senile Animal

Mmmm, a sweet-sweet personal favourite, the Melvins' latest effort, (a) Senile Animal. The Melvins core (Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover), spiced up with the two members of Big Business - sweet-sweet heaviness! To be honest, Big Business always sounded like a Melvins tribute band, so basically we get a doubled Melvins. Something I can live with.
This album rocks from the first track to the last. I get shivers every time I hear the opening double-drumming of "Civilized Worm" or the ass-kicking riff of "The Talking Horse". The Melvins may be ancient, but you know, weirdness is like wine... It only gets better with age.
(I don't like wine. Whatever. I like the Melvins. And (a) Senile Animal might just be their best work)
