People - Misbegotten Man

Another Mary Halvorson project, this time it's dissonant noise pop. She's even singing here.

Einstürzende Neubauten - Tabula Rasa

Strangely enough, I used to dislike Einstürzende Neubauten. Then I learned German, got my hands on a discography, had a few murky, night-time listening sessions, opened up a dictionary or two, and, well, now I'm a fan. "Tabula Rasa" is a great album, it has all these spoken word stuff, various drones and quite interesting arrangements.
Also, I have a fuckin' slow internet, so
updates are going to be sporadic --- as always. Have fun!

Ultralyd - Conditions for a Piece of Music

A very impressive piece of work indeed. It's been some time since I've found a decent "free jazz" influenced record that doens't bore me to death and holds enough, if not surprises, but at least interesting moments to be worth a second, third etc listen. Ultralyd's "Conditions" features free-jazzy saxophones with very tight (almost rock-like) drumming and various noises, effects... Not abrasive but not "ambient" or "smooth" either. Uneasy listening without ears bleeding.

ВИРЬ / Vir' - Хорна

Vir's latest full-length, from 2008. As mentioned in the previous post, Хорна demonstrates a shift towards noisy-droney soundscapism. The rasp vocals are still present, though they are quite rare and mostly just bland with the pulsating drones. It could have been better but nevertheless a great album!

Skullflower - Form Destroyer

A classic album by a classic band. Tons of feedback and noise but somehow it organizes itself into a sonic entity that really just swallows you whole and doesn't let go. Whirling and swirling around, it's awesome!! Opening track "Elephant's Graveyard" give me shivers each time I hear it.

Eat Rust - Eat Rust [promo]

The promo version (encoded at 128kbps, that is) for Eat Rust's new s/t album. 5 tracks of improvised guitar music, drone, blues, noise rock. As usual for other Eat Rust releases: more of the same, but different. For fans of Skullflower, minimalism, twisted blues, noise rock. Send any comments to kisbalim at gmail.com.
ESR might release a physical version, total DIY.

Burning Star Core - The Very Heart of the World

As promised, some more Burning Star Core. This release is different. The frist two tracks are more eclectic, with occassional drumming, more varied violin-effects, sometimes in a dark ambient vein, but mostly just very psychedelic, trance-inducing. Third track "Benjamin" in more along the lines of "Amelia" and "Nyarlathotep" (mm, Lovecraft) is just a bunch of weird noises and modulated human voice.
More to come? Possibly. He has some more good stuff, from the eclectic style.

Burning Star Core - Amelia

A guy with the name C. Spencer Yeh can't do wrong. Especially if he's working in the field of (mostly) improvised noise and is holding a violin in his hand. His musical output is impossible to keep track of. Too much releases on too much underground labels. Whatever. Let's just stick to nice and cosy tip of the iceberg here. This is a CDr/10" release, featuring three tracks, displaying mostly the minimalistic drone-electronics sound of his project (there are other sides as well, to be featured in following posts). "Supersonic Woman" is spacey ambient, "Homing Pigeon" (Worms is all I think of...) is a mish-mash of weird sounds, always reminds me of being inside a ship, by the way, all that crackling and waving and cockroaches chewing their way through the wood. Then there's the lengthy "Point of Departure etc", which is almost like a Reich composition.

Death Dust Extractor - Slay Your Masters or...

...Slave in Chains. Does that album title make sense? Apart from that tiny mistake - yeah (or is it really about slaying your master OR your slave in chains? Who knows with the japs?)! It's all about fucking the system, chaos, anarchy, blah-blah. Mostly chaos, considering the music. Nine tracks = nine blasts of fast, short and brutal Japanese crust/grind/thing/noisecore. Just lean back and enjoy these ten minutes of DJAH-DJAH-DJAH WAAAAAA ROAR! kinda fun.

Aluk Todolo - Descension

Another release from this band, this time a full-length. The recipe is the same, maybe noisier and harsher. What else is left? Listen and hope they are not nazis or something. They do have a thing for esoterix and all that jazz. But they make amazing music.

Aluk Todolo - 7" EP

Trying to revive this blog... all old links are down, well, bad luck. I might do some re-ups later. Gonna be using mediafire, seems to be the most democratic free upload site to me. So.
Here's a pretty awesome release, Aluk Todolo's first EP. Features two compositions (side A & B, respectively). They are one of those bands, whose music gets labeled krautrock all the time, well, yeah, there's some krautrock here, the songs are driven by a steady motorik beat, they are long and monotonous... yeah. Whatever. They took this so called krautrock (krautrock almost became the new post-metal) and added noise and black metal.

John Zorn & Fred Frith - 50th Birthday Celebration Volume 5

One of the best albums in Zorn's 50th Birthday Celebration line. It's an insane record. Frith's prepared guitars are amazing. Sometimes it sounds like strange alien percussions. Listen, enjoy and purchase. Totally worth it.

Merzbow - Tauromachine

I really like this release of Merzbow. It's raw and noisy and a very good listen when I'm in depressed. Yeah.

Oxbow - Love That's Last

Or, as the full title goes: Love That's Last: A Wholly Hypnographic And Disturbing Work Regarding Oxbow. Nifty, huh? And amazingly good stuff. A huge (usually half-naked) bodybuilder with anger managment problems? Noised-up blues riffs? Disharmony, destruction, the end is here or very close? Oxbow's 2006 compilation record has it all...
